With Micron’s $100 billion chip fabrication plant set to rise in Clay, nearby communities are mobilizing to support the development. Senator Chuck Schumer visited Oswego County on Tuesday, advocating for federal funding to facilitate land expansion in Phoenix’s industrial park, crucial for accommodating supply chain companies.
Schumer emphasized the need for expansion to attract suppliers essential to the chip manufacturing process. “We knew once they came, all of the suppliers would come,” he said, highlighting Oswego’s advantages like clean water, available workforce, and strategic location. The land in Phoenix, acquired in the 1980s by Operation Oswego County, is now in high demand due to Micron’s presence.
Austin Wheelock, Executive Director of Operation Oswego County, stressed the urgency of expansion, noting the area’s potential role in the state’s “semiconductor highway.” The federal investment aims to ensure Oswego County can meet the needs of this burgeoning industry and contribute significantly to the nation’s semiconductor production.
