Firefighters in northern California are grappling with a massive wildfire that has tripled in size within a day, scorching an area the size of Los Angeles. The Park Fire, sparked by a burning car, has already destroyed over 130 structures and threatens thousands more, prompting evacuations in Butte, Plumas, Tehama, and Shasta counties.
The fire, which ignited Wednesday when a man pushed a burning car into a gully, rapidly advanced to 480 square miles by Friday night. “There’s a tremendous amount of fuel out there,” said Cal Fire incident commander Billy See, noting the fire’s rapid expansion. Comparisons are being drawn to the 2018 Camp Fire that devastated nearby Paradise.
In addition to the California blaze, more than 110 active fires are burning across the western United States and Canada. Lightning strikes and record heat, exacerbated by climate change, are fueling these fires. In eastern Oregon, a pilot died while fighting one of these wildfires, adding to the toll.
As the Park Fire continues its destructive path, evacuees like Carli Parker and Sherry Alpers face uncertain futures. Parker, who has been forced from her home twice before, expressed little hope for her current residence. “If it’s gone, it’s gone,” said Alpers, who fled with her 12 dogs. Authorities are on high alert as communities brace for the continued threat.
