The Ontario County Board of Supervisors has granted a six-month extension to MSW Consultants for a comprehensive study on the future of the county’s landfill. The Florida-based consultancy, engaged in June 2023, is analyzing the operations at the Seneca-based landfill to guide the Board’s decision on its potential closure by the end of 2028 when its operating permit expires and it is expected to reach capacity.
The extension, unanimously approved by the board’s Planning and Environmental Quality Committee on April 9, will allow MSW Consultants additional time to complete their report, for which the county has allocated $195,000. The full board is set to give final approval later this month.
This study follows a 2023 recommendation from the Seneca Town Board to close the landfill in 2028. The site, operational since 1973 and managed by Casella Waste Services, includes recycling facilities and a plant converting landfill gas into energy, highlighting its environmental significance.
