Finger Lakes VA expands volunteer transportation network

  • Staff Report

The VA Finger Lakes Healthcare System has expanded its volunteer transportation network to include Yates County, improving access to medical care for local veterans. This extension, which started on March 29, is part of the Disabled American Veterans network and operates in conjunction with the Canandaigua VA Medical Center. The initiative, supported by the Yates County Veterans Service Agency and local veterans organizations, aims to ensure veterans can attend necessary medical appointments.

In its first operational week, the service successfully transported five veterans, completing eight round trips to medical appointments. This effort is a testament to the community’s commitment to supporting veterans’ healthcare needs, providing a vital link to VA-approved medical services.

The program’s effectiveness is largely dependent on volunteer drivers. Veterans needing rides for medical appointments can contact DAV Transportation, while those interested in volunteering can reach out to the VA Center for Development and Civic Engagement. This initiative not only facilitates essential healthcare access but also reinforces the community’s respect and support for its veterans.
