The New York Yankees suffered their first series loss of the season, falling 5-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night at the Rogers Centre.

New York (12-6), who has dropped three straight, trailed 5-3 going into the ninth but fought back and cut the deficit to one on Jose Trevino’s groundout before Oswaldo Cabrera grounded out with the tying run on third to end the game. Prior to that, Alex Verdugo nearly tied the game with a two-run home run, but the ball went off the top of the wall for a double.

Jose Trevino opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-out single before Toronto responded with five straight runs.

Carlos Rodón pitched just four innings after Toronto made him throw 101 pitches with several long at-bats. The left-hander allowed three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out five.

Box Score

The Yankees will try to avoid the three-game sweep on Wednesday at 3:07 p.m. Marcus Stroman will take the mound against his former team.
