Iraqi citizen living in NY admits to federal ID fraud, drug possession

Israa Sultan, a 43-year-old Iraqi citizen living in New York, has admitted to lying to U.S. federal officers about her identity. The United States Attorney and the Port Director of Alexandria Bay announced that Sultan pleaded guilty to making a false statement.

This incident occurred on December 8, 2023, when Sultan tried to enter Canada with a U.S. passport that wasn’t hers. Canadian officials denied her entry and handed her over to U.S. Customs, where she was found with 20 grams of cocaine.

Sultan is now facing a potential five years in prison, a fine up to $250,000, and could be monitored for three years after her release. Her sentencing is scheduled for July 26, 2024.
