The New York Yankees have decided who will fill the final spot in their starting rotation to begin the season.

Aaron Boone announced Sunday afternoon that right-hander Luis Gil has earned that spot and will make his first start on Monday, April 1, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gil, 25, has not pitched in a big-league game since 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. However, he was dominant in five spring training games (three starts), posting a 2.87 ERA over 15.1 innings with 23 strikeouts.

Three other guys were competing with Gil for the spot, including Will Warren, Luke Weaver, and Clayton Beeter.

The Yankees will open the season on Thursday at 4:10 p.m. when they visit the Houston Astros for four games.
