The Marcus Whitman Fine & Performing Art Theatre Department premiered the regional debut of “Between the Lines,” a new musical inspired by the novel from renowned author Jodi Picoult and her daughter, Samantha van Leer. The story, adapted for the stage with a book by Picoult and Timothy Allen McDonald and a musical score by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson, opened on Friday, inviting audiences to explore the challenges and dreams of 17-year-old Delilah McPhee, who finds solace in a fairy tale amid the trials of adolescence.

Set against the backdrop of personal and social turmoil, “Between the Lines” weaves a narrative of fantasy and reality, highlighting Delilah’s journey through the pages of her favorite book to confront and transcend her real-world struggles. The production, directed by Damian Grzeskowiak with musical direction by Holly Blueye, features a talented cast including Liv Hill, Robert Sloth, and Madi Kinner, along with special appearances by Whitman teachers. Rated PG13, the show advises parental guidance for viewers under 13.

Performances took place March 22-23 at 7:30 p.m., and March 24 at 2 p.m., with tickets available in advance or at the door. This ambitious staging not only marks a significant achievement for the Marcus Whitman Theatre Department but also brings to life a story of resilience and the power of imagination for audiences in the region.
