Hobart rallies to top Bard in OT

The Hobart College basketball team trailed Bard College by as many as nine points in the second half, but rallied to tie the game with 0.3 seconds remaining in regulation. Junior guard Aidan Rodgers, who made the driving layup that sent to the game to OT, sank a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Statesmen a 66-65 Liberty League win.
Rodgers posted a team-high 17 points, including a 6-for-6 night at the free throw line. First-year guard Alex Moesch added 15 points, including a 3-for-3 effort at the line. Senior forward Ryan Lucey was also perfect at the charity stripe, making all eight of his attempts. He finished the contest with his third double-double of the season, logging 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Carter Meshanic pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to go with six points, three assists and two blocked shots. Senior forward Isaiah Washington and junior guard Pat Healy each chipped in nine points.
Bard got a game-high 18 points from junior guard Lazaros Panagiotounis. He was joined in double figures by junior forward Sean Wilcox, who notched 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.


  • Hobart overcame its worst field goal percentage of the season (.297) with a strong night at the free throw line. The Statesmen were 25-of-28 at the stripe for an 89.3% success rate.
  • Hobart also dominated the glass, outrebounding the visitors 46-36. The Statesmen enjoyed a 14-4 advantage in second chance points.


  • A one or two-possession game for most of the first half, Moesch drained a 3-pointer with under six minutes remaining to give the Statesmen a 20-16 lead, but over the next three minutes the Raptors used a 10-0 run to take the lead. Graduate student guard Kevin Le scored seven of his nine points in the game during the surge.
  • Bard led 31-26 at halftime.
  • The Raptors scored the first four points of the second half to push their lead to nine, but Hobart kept the game from slipping away by recording the next six points.
  • A 2-point game as the one-minute mark of the second half passed, sophomore guard Connor Melis doubled his team’s cushion with two free throws with 34 seconds left.
  • Ten seconds later, Healy make a clutch 3-point play the old fashion way to cut the Bard lead to one.
  • A quick foul, sent Panagiotounis to the line where he missed the first but made the second.
  • Hobart turned the ball over and had to foul again, but this time the Raptors missed both shots, leaving the Statesmen to go the length of the court to tie.
  • Rodgers got the inbounds pass, sprinted up the court, attacked the rim and made a right handed layup with 0.3 seconds left.
  • In overtime, neither team led by more than a single possession. Rodgers accounted for the 13th and final lead change when he sank two freebies with 11 seconds left.
  • Bard got off a shot at the buzzer, but it was off the mark.


  • Hobart improved to 11-2 overall, 4-2 in the Liberty League. The Statesmen keep pace in the conference chase, sitting a half game out of first.
  • Bard its fifth straight to fall to 8-6, 3-4 in league play.


  • Hobart returns to action at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, welcoming Skidmore (4-9, 2-5) to Bristol Gym. The Thoroughbreds won at RIT tonight, 86-83.
