NY turns focus to AI: Can state become ‘hub’ for activity?

New York is set to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with the creation of Empire AI, a consortium led by Governor Kathy Hochul.

This initiative, involving a $400 million investment, aims to establish a state-of-the-art AI computing center in Upstate New York. The consortium includes prestigious institutions like Columbia, Cornell University, NYU, and others, focusing on responsible AI development and job creation.

Empire AI will facilitate collaboration among New York’s leading research institutions, enhancing AI innovation and education.

This effort aligns with Gov. Hochul’s AI policy, the first of its kind, guiding state agencies in utilizing AI responsibly. The policy includes human oversight of automated decisions and a public AI inventory, ensuring transparency and addressing potential biases.
