Herons tame Bengals 5-2

William Smith College senior Elizabeth MacMurray scored a pair of goals as the Heron ice hockey team defeated Buffalo State 5-2 in a non-conference contest at the Buffalo State Ice Arena this evening. With their fifth straight win, William Smith is now 7-3-0 on the season.

Senior Ava Cornforth (1g, 1a) and sophomore Fiona Gallagher (2a) also had multi-point games for William Smith. First-year Mia Iwicki played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons. She made a career-high 23 saves as she earned the win.

The Bengals (1-6-1) had six different players record a point. Chelsea Kingston played all 60 minutes in goal and made 36 saves.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • William Smith opened the scoring at the 17:44 mark of the first period. MacMurray redirected an Alex George shot past Kingston for her fourth goal of the season. Tara Valas also had an assist on the goal.
  • The Herons extended the lead to two goals forty-nine seconds into the middle period. Kayala Ketchabaw wristed a shot past Kingston for her ninth goal of the year. Brittany Foster and Gallagher notched assists on the tally.
  • Four minutes later, Cornforth notched her third goal of the season. She forced a turnover in the offensive end of the rink and slipped a shot past the goalie for an unassisted tally.
  • Vanessa Willick broke up the shutout bid with her fourth goal of the year at the 19:07 mark of the second period. Lilliana Adimey and Quinn Murray had assists on the goal.
  • Carrys Ursell made it 3-2 just over four minutes into the third period. Ursell’s breakaway goal was assisted by Katie Sarich and Rylee Garrow.
  • Two minutes later, Emma Faso added an insurance goal for the Herons. Making her season debut, she poked a rebound across the goal line for her first goal of the season. Cornforth and Allie Cimis had helpers on the goal.
  • MacMurray rounded out the scoring just past the midway point of the final frame. The power-play goal was assisted by Gallagher and Annabel Ziskin.

William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 1, when it takes on UMass Boston. Faceoff at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink is scheduled for 6 p.m.
