The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team was defeated for the first time this season, dropping a 73-56 contest to No. 7 Tennessee in the opening round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Monday afternoon.
Syracuse (3-1) kept pace with the Volunteers (4-0) in the first half, as the Orange trailed by a score of 30-25 after 20 minutes of play. However, Tennessee pulled away in the second stanza, outscoring SU 43-31 to earn the victory.
Chris Bell led the Orange in scoring with 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Judah Mintz poured in 15 points. JJ Starling netted nine, while Benny Williams added eight off the bench.
Syracuse will play No. 11 Gonzaga on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
