Skaneateles Ambulance plans expansion in Cayuga County amid AMR pullout

Skaneateles Ambulance Volunteer Emergency Services (SAVES) is set to expand its operations into Cayuga County, following American Medical Response’s (AMR) decision to cease operations in the area by year’s end.

Stephen Knapp, the executive director of SAVES, told The Citizen the service has applied for a certificate of need to extend its coverage to the towns of Owasco and Sennett.

This move comes as SAVES aims to fill the gap left by AMR’s departure, which is expected to significantly impact local emergency medical services.

SAVES, already providing service to parts of Owasco and Sennett within the Skaneateles School District, seeks to enhance its presence in these areas. The expansion would support existing basic life support services offered by the Owasco Fire Department and coverage by Old Erie Emergency Services and the Throop Fire Department in Sennett.

In preparation for this expansion, SAVES is exploring the possibility of stationing one of its two rigs in Sennett and is actively recruiting to bolster its workforce.
