As we’ve gone through the process of interviewing candidates for elected office across the region there have been several commonalities. For example, water quality is a major issue whether you live in Auburn, Canandaigua, Geneva, or Owasco. Why? Because the Finger Lakes are dealing with an unprecedented, annual HABs problem.
For those running to serve on the Cayuga County Legislature, which recently had its map redrawn, the health of Owasco Lake is one of the biggest issues. That said, it’s not the only issue. The county that stretches 70+ miles from north-to-south faces an array of challenges that are not unique.
For example, the need for infrastructure enhancements — as investments from decades past become obsolete; the need for economic development — despite long-term promise from the Micron development in Central New York; and the need to make rural communities a destination for housing — as population declines and developers look to closer suburbs of Syracuse as better options.
While we weren’t able to connect with every candidate running for Cayuga County Legislature — the option was there for any seeking office there. Those who did participate are featured below from our meet the candidates series.
