Two members of the William Smith College soccer team were honored by the Liberty League this afternoon. Forward Julia DiMenna was named the women’s soccer offensive performer of the week while goalie Kirsten Nelson was named the defensive performer of the week.

DiMenna and Nelson led the Herons to a pair of wins on Cozzens Field last week. The Herons defeated Ithaca 1-0 on Wednesday and then knocked off 20th-ranked Clarkson 3-0. With the two wins, William Smith is now 6-0-3 overall on the season with a 2-0-2 mark in conference play.

DiMenna scored both game-winning goals for the Herons. Against the Bombers, she scored the game’s lone goal in the 84th minute, heading home a Katrine Berg free kick. On Saturday, she dribbled the ball around the Golden Knight goalie and chipped a shot into the open goal, giving the Herons a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute. A starter in all nine games this season, DiMenna leads the team with five goals and 10 points.

Nelson played all 180 minutes in goal, posting two shutouts. In Wednesday’s game with Ithaca, she made one save. Nelson followed that up with a career-high seven saves against Clarkson. Nelson is 6-0-3 with a 0.78 GAA and a .833 save percentage.

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they take on Vassar in Poughkeepsie, New York. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
