Weedsport will implement 7% hotel tax if Gov. Hochul gives final approval

A bill authorizing the village of Weedsport to implement a 7% hotel tax has received legislative approval.

The Citizen reports that the tax, proposed due to an increase in police and fire department calls to the Rodeway Inn & Suites, comes in addition to county occupancy and state sales taxes.

The legislation, backed by state Sen. Rachel May and Assemblyman John Lemondes, is designed to help balance the strain on local emergency services.

Weedsport Mayor Tom Winslow expressed hope that the new tax would offset the additional resource requirements resulting from a 10% uptick in calls to the motel.

Pending Gov. Kathy Hochul’s approval, the tax will take immediate effect and continue until December 31, 2025.
