Canandaigua school district’s quest to replace its Braves nickname and Friendship Belt logo has narrowed to eight options after the second of three community surveys.
The contenders include Bears, Cardinals, Coyotes, Gray Wolves, Lake Hawks, Lakers, and Waves. Superintendent Jamie Farr revealed that these options were selected from 400 suggestions and student consultations, based on the most popular choices.
The need for change comes after a unanimous decision by the New York State Board of Regents to ban the use of Native American names, mascots, and logos for schools and their sports teams. The district, which unsuccessfully tried to retain the Braves nickname, will conduct a final survey on June 16 to finalize the new name based on the community’s top preference.
Post-graduation, the selected name will be announced and a committee will be formed to work on a style guide, potential mascot, and identifying a branding and logo design firm.
