A new ordinance mandating inspection and replacement of lead water service lines before property sales was introduced by the City Council on June 1.
The regulation, aimed at ensuring clean, lead-free drinking water, requires that property owners bear the cost of the replacement. A public hearing, and potentially a vote on adoption, is slated for July 13.
Officials estimate that approximately 250 private properties serviced by lead or galvanized steel service lines exist within the city’s water system, which contains around 3,400 properties in total.
In compliance with the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act Lead Ban, the new ordinance would compel owners to replace any lead or galvanized water service lines, or certify their absence or future replacement, before transferring the property to a new owner.
