Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has announced her support for the bipartisan Military Family Nutrition Access Act, which she intends to include in the 2023 Farm Bill.
The bill aims to exclude Basic Allowance for Housing from the income calculations that determine eligibility for the supplemental nutrition assistance program.
This change would ensure that SNAP is in line with other federal assistance programs that already exclude Basic Allowance for Housing eligibility calculations.
The senator argues that the change is necessary as one in ten households in America are food insecure, with 24% of service members experiencing food insecurity.
She believes that food insecurity poses a threat to military readiness and overall national security.
