Outdoor lifestyle brand, YETI, has issued a recall for more than 1.9 million of its soft coolers and gear cases due to a potential safety hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on Thursday, March 9th, stating that the detachable magnets in the products pose a risk of serious injury or death.
The products included in the recall are the YETI Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0, Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler, and SideKick Dry Gear Case. These products were sold between March 2018 and January 2023.
According to the CPSC, the magnet-lined closures on these products “fail and result in detached magnets, posing a risk of serious injury or death if ingested.” YETI has stated that it is voluntarily recalling the products in cooperation with the CPSC.
Each of the recalled products has a main-pocket closure lined with high-power magnets, which are enclosed in a heat-sealed plastic strip. The CPSC has received 1,399 reports of magnet-lined closures degrading or failing, prompting the recall.
Consumers who own one of the recalled products are advised to stop using them immediately and contact YETI for a full refund or replacement product. More information on the recall can be found on YETI’s official website.
This recall is a reminder of the importance of product safety and the need for manufacturers to ensure their products do not pose a risk to consumers. The CPSC continues to work with companies to identify and address potential safety hazards in products to protect consumers from harm.
