Felony charges for inmate who assaulted deputies at Livingston County Jail

  • Staff Report

Two deputies were injured after being assaulted by an inmate at the Livingston County Jail, according to Sheriff Tom Dougherty. The incident occurred on February 28th when 23-year-old federal inmate Johnmichael Santiago attacked the two deputies.

One of the deputies sustained head, wrist, and leg injuries, while the other suffered injuries to the stomach and back. Both deputies were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

After the incident, Santiago was charged with two counts of felony assault in the second degree. He was arraigned, and bail was set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

Sheriff Dougherty expressed concern about the safety of law enforcement officers who work in jails and prisons. He said that such incidents are becoming increasingly common and underscore the need for additional training and resources to ensure the safety of both inmates and correctional officers.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the assault and is working with other law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served. The department urges anyone with information about the incident to contact them immediately.
