Yankees’ Frankie Montas to undergo right shoulder surgery

Some unfortunate news for the New York Yankees as they open spring training in Tampa, Florida.

Manager Aaron Boone announced that right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas will undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday, February 21. There is no exact timeline for his return, but Boone did not rule out it being season-ending.

Montas was traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Yankees at last year’s trade deadline for pitching prospects JP Spears, Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, and second baseman Cooper Bowman.

The 29-year-old struggled after the trade, posting a 1-3 record with a 6.35 ERA in eight starts for the Yankees before landing on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

Domingo Germán and Clarke Schmidt will be competing for the final rotation spot in New York’s rotation.
