Mysterious lights spotted across Western New York on Monday night were revealed to be a SpaceX Starlink satellite. The beam was captured by several viewers who shared photos of it, sparking interest among residents in the area.
Starlink is a satellite constellation that provides broadband internet through a low Earth orbit, enabling it to offer high-speed and low-latency internet to users around the world. It orbits the planet closer to the Earth and travels across the globe at around 550 kilometers up.
SpaceX, founded by entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002, is a spacecraft manufacturer, launcher and satellite communications corporation, responsible for developing the Starlink constellation. Starlink is a network of thousands of satellites that operate in low Earth orbit and work to deliver internet service.
The Starlink constellation is part of Musk’s plan to provide internet to underserved areas and support future projects such as a proposed Mars colonization mission.
