A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a car thief in the town of Thurston on Monday.
DEC police pulled over a vehicle for running a stop sign and speeding on County Road 12. Upon speaking with the driver, police discovered that the license was suspended and that the car had been reported stolen minutes earlier.
With the help of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was taken into custody.
The suspect admitted to stealing the car and was ticketed for the traffic violations in addition to being charged with felony grand larceny.
The case was handed over to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office for further processing. The stolen car was returned to its rightful owner after the investigation was completed.
