Paper bags officially disappear from Walmart stores: What next?

The paper bag era is over at Walmart stores across New York.

The decision comes as part of the company’s effort to hit a zero-waste goal by 2025.

Customers will now be required to bring their own reusable bags to shop with. This change is also taking effect in a few other states. It comes a little more than two years after the company banned free plastic bags in its New York stores.

Sustainability experts say the carbon footprint of paper bags is actually more significant than plastic. Why? They are heavier duty and take more carbon to produce, ship, transport, and throw away.
