112.7 million travelers are expected to travel more than 50 miles away from their home for the holiday season.
According to AAA, this is 3.6 million more Americans than last year in 2021. This is also expected to be the third busiest year since the year 2000 for traveling.
According to aula Twidale, AAA’s Senior Vice President of Travel, more people will be traveling for longer this year because many people are able to work remotely.
When it comes to methods of travel, 102 million Americans are expected to drive this year, which is 2 million more than last year. 7.2 million Americans are expected to fly. As for bus, train, and cruises, the expected number of people traveling this way is expected to be 3.6 million.
AAA has also determined when the best and worst times to travel during the holiday season will be.

- 12/23/22: Worst time to travel is between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., best time to travel is before 2 p.m. and after 8 p.m.
- 12/24/22: Worst time to travel is between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., best time to travel is before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
- 12/25/22: Little travel expected
- 12/26/22: Worst time to travel is between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., best time to travel is before 12 p.m. and after 7 p.m.
- 12/27/22: Worst time to travel is between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., best time to travel is before 2 p.m. and after 8 p.m.
- 12/28/22: Worst time to travel is between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., best time to travel is before 2 p.m. and after 8 p.m.
- 12/29/22: Worst time to travel is between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., best time to travel is before 2 p.m. and after 8 p.m.
- 12/30/22: Worst time to travel is between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., best time to travel is before 2 p.m. and after 8 p.m.
- 12/31/22: Little travel expected
