Residents in the state of New York have only six months to upgrade their driver’s licenses to REAL IDs if they want to board flights.

The deadline was extended due to the pandemic and is now May 3, 2023.
Beginning in May, if residents do not have a REAL ID and they want to board a flight, they will not be able to with a regular license.
Despite this, other forms of TSA approved identification will still be accepted.
The new ID will meet a federal standard, not just the state standards.
It will have a gold star placed at the top right corner of the license. They started being issued to residents back in 2017.
You must apply for your REAL ID in person
By federal law, you can only get your REAL ID in person. To make it faster, the DMV has made it so you can visit select offices where your application will be pre-screened digitally.
Once you submit your application for pre-screening you’ll receive an email directing you to fix any errors and what to do next.
After the application is approved, you will be scheduled an in-person visit at a participating DMV at a time that is convenient for you.
