Police and fire departments are warning of a text message scam that tries selling sweatshirts to victims to support the agencies.

Warnings have been popping up in areas all over New York State.

The scam is claiming to sell unsuspecting locals sweatshirts to support their local police department. There is a link attached, but police are saying it’s a scam.

According to My Twin Tiers, the text goes to your cell phone and offers clothes in support of the police department.

It’s often hoodies, and a link is attached saying it’s to buy the hoodies.

Police are urging residents to not click the link because the link is the scam.


Areas including Hornell, Watkins Glen, Wavery, and Bath are seeing these texts.

Warnings were officially issued through the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department, Hornell Police, Waverly Police, Painted Post Police, and the Bath Volunteer Fire Department.

Members belonging to the agencies have received the scams as well.

You are asked to delete the text once you receive it.
