ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team fell 2-0 to the University of Rochester in its first conference game of the season. The Herons now sit at 6-2 on the season with a 0-1 record in the Liberty League.
Friday night’s matchup between the Herons and the Yellowjackets was evenly matched going into the fourth quarter. Both offenses turned on the pressure in the final 15 minutes recording eight of the 12 shots in the game. Junior Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording one save on the night.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- Rochester would break through in the 53rd minute thanks to first-year Anya Arseneau who tapped in a shot from one yard out off a pass from senior Karina Bridger.
- Following the Rochester goal, the Herons would apply the pressure earning two penalty corners resulting in five shots by the Herons. Senior Mary Kate Breward led the way with two shots in the offensive burst. Senior Mackenzie Wodka, junior Sofia Pattillo, and sophomore Rebecca Mantione all landed one shot within the Herons’ late offensive push.
- In the 57th minute, the Yellowjackets would have a golden opportunity as Maeve Fogarty earned a breakaway after she gained possession of a mishandled back pass by the Herons. McCormick would deny Fogarty coming off her line and earning a nice save on the breakaway.
- With 30 seconds left in the contest, Bella Militi would add a second for the Yellowjackets off an assist from Maeve Fogarty to seal the victory for Rochester.
