Deputies: Two taken into custody after Walmart employees chase shoplifter into parking lot

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of two individuals following an investigation at the Canandaigua Walmart.

According to a news release, Kyle Carey, 21, of Geneva, and Eric Shafer, 18, of Canandaigua were arrested after a shoplifting complaint from the store.

Carey was found to have stolen merchandise valued around $32 and concealed it while fleeing staff in the parking lot. Share was found to have stolen more than $50 worth of merchandise.

Both passed all points of sale without rendering payment. Carey had an active trespass ban from Walmart and was subsequently arrested for third-degree burglary. He was released to answer the charge at a later date.

Shafer was ticketed for petit larceny. That charge will also be answered at a later date in local court.
