More bees around? Experts say it’s normal for August, September in the Finger Lakes

Why have there been so many bees lately?

News10NBC took that question to Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ontario County because of viewer feedback over the last two weeks.

Many have reported seeing more bees, or finding more ground nests in the last few weeks. Some have wondered if it’s an outlier issue.

Yes – there are more bees this time of year. But it’s pretty normal. Most bees in New York are ground-nesting, so between August and September, when they become more aggressive, people notice them.

Experts at Cornell even said that you could be running over nests in the spring and early summer, but when bees become more active in August and September, they suddenly become prominent.
