State outlines new training expectations for concealed carry permit holders in New York, but it doesn’t apply to most outside NYC

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and the Division of State Police has established statewide minimum standards for instructors administering concealed carry firearms safety training courses.

The state legislature passed a series of new requirements earlier this summer for concealed carry weapons.

The new standards go into effect on September 1, 2022. In addition, the hand-on live training is required.

There’s a written test, which an 80% or better is required, two hours of hands-on training where you must show proficiency in range safety, safe drawing, dry firing, and safe loading, among other standards.

There is also an assessment to prove proficiency.

However, if you live outside of New York City, these statewide training items are not required. Individuals can choose to take the training, but it won’t be required in places like the Finger Lakes or Central New York.
