Auburn’s Great Race returns August 14 after COVID-19 hiatus

After a virtual year in 2020, and a full postponement last year Auburn’s popular Great Race is back this year.

Race distances, course changed this year

The paddling, running, and bike race will leave on August 14 from Emerson Park on Owasco Lake. The Citizen quotes event co-creator Jim Hanley as saying since the pandemic, new members have joined the race committee, bringing new ideas.

When the race began, it was a 10K run, 20-mile bike, and 4-mile canoe. When interest in the race began to decline, organizers offered a shorter course as an option. Over time, the short course became the more popular of the two. This year, event organizers are splitting the difference, with a 4-mile run, 12.4-mile bike ride, and 2.5-mile canoe.
