The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is tracking the potential spread of avian influenza, or bird flu into the state.
Chris Lajewski with the Montezuma Audubon Center says the bird flu has begun to move beyond poultry flocks into the wild bird population.
The European strain of bird flu has been in North America since 2020. It’s been found this year in wild bird populations in Cayuga and Wayne Counties. Lajewski says it has not been found in song birds in our area yet.
He recommends a mild, soapy solution for feeder cleaning.
