The Rochester Red Wings returned to the win column on Tuesday night by defeating the Syracuse Mets, 5-4, in the series opener at NBT Bank Stadium.
Rochester jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning on Joey Meneses’s grand slam.
Daniel Palka put Syracuse on the board in the fourth with an RBI single.
Cole Freeman crushed a solo home run in the eighth to put the Red Wings back up by four runs.
Syracuse added a pair of runs in the eighth to make it a two-run game. Nick Plummer worked a bases-loaded walk and Cody Bohanek scored on Carlos Rincon’s groundball.
Nick Dino homered in the ninth to make it a 5-4 game but Syracuse was unable to complete the comeback.
Logan Verrett allowed a run over six innings for the Red Wings.
Jake Mangum picked up his first Triple-A hit for the Mets.
The two teams will be right back at it on Wednesday. The first pitch is slated for 11:05 a.m.
