When is the deadline?
Most taxpayers will be required to file their federal taxes by April 18, 2022. This is because April 15 is recognized as a holiday, Emancipation day, in Washington, DC where the IRS has headquarters. Read more about it here.
There are some exceptions to the deadline:

- Hawaii- April 20, 2022
- Iowa- May o2, 2022
- Louisiana- May 16, 2022
- Maine- April 19, 2022
- Maryland- July 15, 2022
- Massachusetts- April 19, 2020
- Nebraska- April 15, 2022
- Oklahoma- April 20, 2022 (if filing electronically0
- Virginia- May 1, 2022
Your request for an extension will have to be made by April 18. Once granted the extension, you’ll then have until October.
It is important to note that filing an extension doesn’t push back your IRS payment date.
