Local residents and activists held a rally on Friday, March 25 to demand area officials work on implementing Ithaca’s Green New Deal.
The rally is part of the Global Climate Strike movement, which calls for justice for communities that have been disproportionately impact by climate change.
“A lot of work needs to be done around implementation, which is a huge part of it. The Green New Deal has a ton of lofty goals, and that’s what the rally is about,” said Sunrise Ithaca Coordinator Siobhan Hull, according to Ithaca Voice.
Attendees included Luis Aguirre-Torres, sustainability director for the City of Ithaca, Sunrise Ithaca, Ithaca Democratic Socialists of America, the Learning Farm, and Ithaca High School’s Green Team.
Aguirre-Torres closed out the rally by speaking about the importance of continuing the fight against climate change and having the difficult conversations necessary for change to occur.
