Children are experiencing a mental health crisis, say NY healthcare workers

New York healthcare workers are seeing an increase in mental health issues among children.

As of Thursday, March 3, 25% of all children at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital were there for mental health reasons.

Mental health struggles were the second leading cause of death among children prior to the pandemic. Last year, health officials declared a national emergency in children’s mental health. Although doctors say it’s difficult to identify the exact COVID-19 pandemic problems contributing to the crisis, there are some notable factors.

“The COVID pandemic has brought in terms of isolation and anxiety, loss of loved ones, financial uncertainty, there’s also a lot of divisiveness in the community,” said Chairman of Pediatrics at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital Dr. Gregory Conners, according to CNY Central.

Doctors stress the importance of children reaching out to get help if they are struggling.
