Third-ranked Elmira College scored twice in the second period and twice in the third period in a 4-0 victory over William Smith College in the semifinals of the New England Hockey Conference Tournament at the Murray Athletic Center this afternoon.
Heron goalie Amanda Aalto played the full 60 minutes and made 48 saves, one shy of her season-high set in a 3-2 overtime loss to Elmira on Nov. 12, 2021, and two off her career-high set at Nazareth on Feb. 29, 2020.
The Soaring Eagles’ Eliza Beaudin had a hand in all four goals in the game, assisting on both second period goals and scoring twice in the third period. Morgan Mordini chipped in a goal and two assists. Leonie Kuehberger made 12 saves to earn the shutout.
The teams played a scoreless first period, but the top-seeded Soaring Eagles carried the play, outshooting the sixth-seeded Herons 15-3. In the second period, Elmira turned up the pressure and cashed in during the first minute of play. Madi Morton slipped a shot past Aalto with just 25 seconds run off the clock. Mordini scored her goal 11 seconds before the end of the period to give the home team a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission. The Soaring Eagles had a 23-6 advantage in shots during the middle 20 minutes. Beaudin scored her goals just over two minutes apart in the middle of the third period.
Elmira was 0-for-4 on the power play, while William Smith was 0-for-2.
Elmira improved to 23-2-1 and will face fifth-seeded Castleton (15-9-2) in the NEHC Championship game on March 5. The Spartans upset second-seeded Norwich 1-0 in today’s other semifinal.
The Herons end the season with a 10-15-1 overall record.
