How did it spread?

The World Health Organization conducted a study that looked into how SARS-CoV-2 was transmitted from bats to humans. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that is responsible for COVID-19. Click here to read more.

The WHO generated possible theories of transmission. They found that direct contagion from bat to human is “possible or probable.” However, an intermediary animal transmitting to humans is “probable or very probable.” The theory that COVID-19 was generated in a lab is considered “extremely unlikely.”

Bat-to-human interaction is minimal, so an intermediary animal that has more interactions with humans is probable. Scientists are still working to determine that animal.
