The New York State Office of Unclaimed Funds gives $1.5 million back to New Yorkers each day- With a few clicks on their website, you can find out if there are any unclaimed funds in your name.
Lawrence Schantz, the Director of the Office of Unclaimed Funds, encourages New Yorkers to visit the office’s website, then type in their last and first name to see if anything comes up, according to Rochester First. Those without internet access can call 1-800-221-9311 for assistance.
Schantz says the unclaimed funds are largely made up of money in the form of checks that have been given to New Yorkers but went unclaimed. After three years unclaimed, the money is returned to the NYS Office of Unclaimed Funds, a subdivision of the NYS Comptroller’s Office.
