Newark Middle School’s music programs are hoping to raise $200 for Common Threads, a non-profit children’s clothing closet located in the Woodlane Community Church.
The plan was for NMA students to obtain sponsors, who pledge a 10-cent donation per every minute the students practiced instruments or sang, for the service project that ran from January 30 through February 5, according to Finger Lakes Times. Students will collect donations this week.
“My mission is to strengthen students’ practice skills and empower our youth to move outside of themselves and proactively help one other,” said Rebekah Valerio, a NMS band teacher who pitched the idea to her students.
The money will go towards purchasing new children’s socks and underwear for the Common Threads operation, which is open 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month.
