New York State Supreme Court Justice Craig Doran will decide whether Geneva’s new civilian Police Review Board (PRB) can move forward. A union representing many in the Geneva Police Department is challenging the PRB is court.
The judge heard legal arguments against the PRB in a virtual hearing on Wednesday, January 26, according to Finger Lakes Times. Doran gave no indication when he will issue a decision, saying he has a lot of factors to consider.
Geneva’s City Council decided to create the PRB via Local Law 1 in 2021. Local 3471 of NYS Law Enforcement Officers Union is seeking a permanent injunction against the law, saying the PRB violates the city’s collective bargaining agreement with the police union and their right to union representation in questioning before the PRB.
