Million of families have struggled without the monthly child tax credit payment, but could they see two in February?
Child tax credit payments ended in 2022 when the Build Back Better plan failed to pass.
While this was a blow to families relying heavily on those payments, the White House appears to be working hard to reinstate them.
2022 child tax credit payments
The White House Secretary, Jen Psaki, shared that the possibility of two payments in Feb. exists if lawmakers could get some version of the bill to pass.
The two payments would be for Feb. and to make up for a missed payment in Jan.
Psaki said if they could work it out, the U.S. Treasury could look into double payments next month.
2021 child tax credit payments
In 2021 the child tax credit jumped from $2,000 to as high as $3,600 for those with children under age 6.
Payments worth up to $300 were sent each month from July through Dec., with the last check falling on Dec. 15, 2021.
Despite the expansion reverting back to $2,000, families can still claim the $2,000 if they qualify.
On top of that, families can collect the other half of their credit for 2021 on their tax return in 2022.
If anyone did not get their payments or opted out, they may get the full refund of $3,000-$3,600 this tax season.
