Some lawmakers say Hochul term limits proposal doesn’t go far enough

Some state lawmakers say the term limits proposal announced by Governor Kathy Hochul in her State of the State address doesn’t go far enough.

Spectrum News quotes Western New York Republican Assemblyman Joe Giglio as saying Assembly members and Senators should also face limits, citing the case of former Speaker Sheldon Silver. “He controlled the entire Assembly process; controlled it’s majority. He thought it was his. He took ownership of it. I think the last governor took ownership of the state of New York. It’s not the way it works,” said Giglio.

Capital Region Democrat John McDonald said legislative leaders should be term limited, but he doesn’t believe limits should necessarily extend to rank and file members.

The proposal announced by the Governor in the State of the State address would place a two-term limit on the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and comptroller in New York. The change would require amending the state constitution. It would have to be approved in two consecutive legislative sessions, then by the voters.
