Clifton Springs man charged with criminally negligent homicide after hunting incident in Phelps

A 61-year-old Clifton Springs man faces a criminally negligent homicide charge after a hunting incident on Thanksgiving.

Kevin Hudson was arrested after a joint investigation with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation following the shooting that left Zachary Barse, 28, of Gorham dead.

The two were hunting together in a wooded area on Cross Road in the town of Phelps. Barse wounded a deer and was tracking it on foot when Hudson took a shot with his shotgun from a tree stand when he saw movement.

That movement was actually Barse, who was fatally shot by the shotgun round. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hudson was issued an appearance ticket and released.
