Tompkins Health Director says masking and vaccinating is best approach to COVID

Tompkins County health officials say they support what Governor Kathy Hochul called a mask mandate.

Tompkins County Public Health Director Frank Kruppa tells CNY Central a combination of masking and vaccinating are the best way to deal with COVID. His remarks came as Cornell shut down in-person campus activities after discovering three hundred cases of the Omicron variant on campus over the weekend. He says people should wear masks in indoor spaces, regardless of their vaccination status.

While Tompkins County says it supports the mask mandate, it has not said whether it will enforce it. A number of counties said Monday they would not, most saying they lack the manpower and resources to do so. Those announcement came before the Governor said later in the day enforcement would be up to counties and individual businesses.
