Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin says the state is sending 13 National Guard teams to Rochester to help with hospital staff shortages.
Benjamin made the announcement during a Wednesday appearance in Rochester. News 10-NBC reports most of the teams will be sent to Monroe Community Hospital. The state is looking for people with medical backgrounds to staff the two member teams.
Governor Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency last week, giving her broad powers to take steps to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. Monroe County declared its own state of emergency this week in the wake of rising hospitalizations and a declining number of available ICU beds.
