Two teens face charges after armed robbery in Canandaigua: One flees custody during arraignment

On Tuesday around 9 p.m. police responded to a Jefferson Avenue residence for the report of an armed robbery in progress.

Upon arrival officers determined that two juvenile suspects threatened the resident with a knife and stole property before fleeing on foot.

After an extensive search, the two juveniles were located on West Gibson Street and taken int custody.

A 17-year-old Rochester resident and 13-year-old Newark resident were arrested in similar incidents in Gates, New York earlier this month.

Around 9 a.m. while waiting to arraigned the 17-year-old he escaped from police after pushing past an officer and running through an exit door.

A physical struggle ensued outside as an officer attempted to restrain the teen, then a foot chase ensued after escaping again.

The teen was found hiding in a garage on Gotham Street and was taken into custody. A brief hyper-reach notification went out to neighbors in the area telling them to shelter in place.

It was quickly lifted and there was no risk to the public. Police say the officer was treated at Thompson Hospital and released.

The 17-year-old was charged with robbery and escape. He was transported to the Monroe County Children’s Center pending a future court date.

The 13-year-old was released to the custody of the Sheriff’s Office in Wayne County where he’s listed as a missing person wanted by the Newark Police Department.

Additional charges are pending for both teens.
