Unite New York strives to change how voting happens in the primaries

One man in Upstate New York has decided to start a political movement he calls Unite New York.

One of the biggest goals of the organization, created by businessman Martin Babinec, is to change how voting in the primaries is done.

The Democrat and Republican parties select their nominees separately in closed primaries. By opening them up to all voters instead of keeping them separate, it gives New Yorkers a chance to have more options in who they vote for.

Many people are choosing to not be registered as Democrat or Republican. This makes it so they’re unable to participate in the primaries.

By making this change, those nominated in the primaries will be chosen by more residents in the state who. up until that point, could not vote until the main election.
